Your child’s vision plays a crucial role in their development and learning. Since children rely heavily on their eyesight to explore and understand the world, ensuring their eyes are healthy from an early age is essential. But when should you schedule their first eye exam? Here’s what parents need to know.

Why Are Early Eye Exams Important?

Early eye exams are essential for detecting vision problems before they impact a child’s learning and development. Conditions like myopia (nearsightedness), amblyopia (lazy eye), and strabismus (eye misalignment) can develop in early childhood, and addressing them promptly leads to better long-term outcomes.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, approximately 40% of children have myopia, with an increased likelihood if one or both parents are nearsighted. Regular eye exams help catch these issues early, ensuring proper treatment and management.

When Should Your Child Have Their First Eye Exam?

It’s recommended that children undergo their first comprehensive eye exam between 6 and 12 months of age. During this visit, the optometrist will check for:

  • Pupil Response – How the eyes react to light.
  • Fixation & Tracking – The ability to follow a moving object.
  • General Eye Health – Checking for any congenital conditions or abnormalities.

What About Future Eye Exams?

  • Ages 3 to 5: A second eye exam is recommended before kindergarten. This ensures your child has the necessary visual skills for learning, such as depth perception, color vision, and visual acuity.
  • Ages 6 and Older: Once your child starts school, they should have an eye exam at least once a year to monitor changes in vision and overall eye health. Children with risk factors (such as a family history of eye disease) may require more frequent visits.

Signs Your Child May Need an Eye Exam Sooner

If you notice any of the following, schedule an eye exam as soon as possible:

  • Squinting or sitting too close to screens.
  • Frequent eye rubbing or excessive blinking.
  • Complaints of headaches or blurry vision.
  • Difficulty focusing on reading or schoolwork.
